Serious ornithological texts contemporaneous with CC still tend to be geared towards egg-collectors rather than 'watchers' (indeed egg-collecting was still - as is suggested in GN - an integral part of serious ornithology).
Perhaps AR had quite an influence on the way views on the pastime have changed since then?
