Surely the genuine and apparently unforced welcome given to Nancy and Peggy by every farming family (Dixons, Jacksons, Swainsons etc) in the area indicates the absence of any financial tie-up? I would think that if N and P were the landlord's daughters, their reception would be polite but sullen. Or, maybe, over-obsequious, but this is not a Cumbrian (was Cumberland) trait!
