On Jim Turner: from his discussion with Missee Lee, we know that he was at Oxford before he decided to drop Oxford before it dropped him; not just because of the boat-race night fracas with a policeman’s helmet?

Then he goes off to see the world; sometimes as a ships’ boy; a hard life as he says to Roger. And as a passenger; his trunk with shipping labels belonged to a passenger not a crewman.

Beckfoot could be a 19C home or even second home (though not a Victorian “folly”) rather than the home of an older local family of landowning gentry.

John says in WH that “children” (meaning the D’s) shouldn’t be brought up in towns; but I don’t think that the Walkers live in the country?
