What does an entail entail?

I'll buy most of Andrew's speculative history except the "entailed" bit.
I thought entails were the preserve of the landed aristocracy and their attempts to keep the family landholdings intact and in the family name by ensuring that the land was passed with the title down the male line. If Beckfoot was entailed that would suggest ( to me) that it was part of a larger landed estate and not the "second home" of a family of industrialists as outlined by Andrew.
Or were entails common among 19C industrialists?
