Andy - you and Prue Eckett must have been reading too much 'Bleak House' recently. By 1900, 'entailed' estates were obsolete for property consisting of the average type of house and garden. You are right in saying that they only had relevance to the old settled estates, dukedoms, earldoms etc. In any case, after the Settled Land Act 1925, entails could be broken, or 'barred' as lawyers say.

Just one question - can you bar an entail with a sisterhook?
