Oh dear - the 'watches back 50 years' joke is an old one, and was told to me by an NZ girl I worked with some years ago. Nevertheless I apologise to Prue Eckett if she took it as an attack on a country which, as John Lambert reports, has a great deal to commend it. I wish I could get away with jokes in the same way as others on Tarboard! I seem to be for ever apologising.

Having said that, and getting back to property law, I honestly don't think Nevil Shute can be taken as gospel on UK property law, and by the way no one is free to treat real property, i.e. land, according to 'habit'. The Law of Property Act 1925 applies to everybody and is LAW. Now Prue, if we're going to be sensitive, please stop alleging that Dickensian land laws still applied in the UK in the 1930s - they did not. That is plain wrong, and last time I used that phrase someone objected - well if anyone objects this time - Bog Off!
