Something else may add to this discussion: I noticed a number of years ago that William Wordsworth (c. 1700s) used to spell "colour" as "color" in his poetry.

This leads one to the fascinating supposition that the "Mayflower" passengers sailed off with the current spelling of that word (and others too) as "color" and somewhat later Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and rest of British Africa changed to a new spelling.

One can get some fancy directories which have the origin (and dates) of word usage, and anyone with these may be able to add to this discussion. Anyone with one ?

So who's right: Those who changed or those who stayed the same ?
