I'm glad Andy brought up that quotation - I didn't dare after last time!!! But it is very neat.

I agree that 'course of history' is an unfortunate turn of phrase and retract it. However, I'm not sure what Peter's driving at with his comments on 'destiny'. (I absolutely agree that it would be boring if we all agreed - dammit we'd just talk about how much we all like Arthur Ransome's books all the time, and what would be the point of that??!!!)

In some ways I'm quite relieved that you said that, because I was beginning to think I'd missed the point of both the comments on history that I replied to!!! But you are essentially making a fatalistic point about history, and therefore in a sense do suggest a 'course of history' but the course is determined by the current, not the helmsman... Is that right? It's intriguing but I would like to get more of an idea about the origins of this current if it is not religious, nor anything to do with classes and social movements? Is it science? Evolution? Neither of these affect which way you turn at a junction... I'm intrigued!
