Waking up in the Morning!

We are just re-reading Pigeon Post, and I have noticed a feature of the novels which has always struck me as odd: on a number of occasions, one of the characters will wake up and spend some time in re-orientating themselves to their environment. In PP Dot wakes up in the Dog's Home for the first time, and has to adjust to the fact that she is no longer in the Beckfoot spare room. You will find similar passages in the other books. My point is this: As a child, so far as I can recall, I never had such a problem. If I was away on holiday, or staying with a friend, I never woke up in the morning wondering where I was. Can Tarboard readers share their own experiences of this? Are the majority like me, with no problem, or it is usual to take some time to decide just where you are?
