Dot's waking up to the slow realisation that she is in the Dog's Home rather than in the spare room at Beckfoot is, of course, in The Picts and the Martyrs (the start of chapter 7, to be exact) rather than Pigeon Post.
On the point at issue, as a child I recognised with delight in Ransome the uncertainty (and often the pleasure) of waking up somewhere unexpected. The only problem is that as I grow older, I am too often unsure in the 'waking' day as to exactly where I am, and what I am supposed to be doing ...
