Thames Tonnage was developed in 1854, not the 1840's, and the formula should be:

(L-B) x B x 1/2B
________________ = Tonnage
94

So, (27-9) x 9 x 4.5
________________ = 7.75 tons
94

I have buried my copy of the Riddle at the bottom of a pile, in moving house, but the Thames Tonnage of "Dulcie" ought to be around 9, and her Nett Register tonnage would be quite a bit less. My own boat has a Thames Tonnage of 12 and a Nett Register tonnage of 6.69.

They would have been using either Thames tonnage or Nett Register tonnage. Builder's Old Measurement was not used for yachts after the 1860's.
