Very elegant reasoning. I agree that Patrick is right and I was wrong. Woodbridge certainly operates on this basis - the wheel runs when the tide is already well down - but it has only a small pool now, specially built for it, as the main pool is now a yacht harbour.

Incidentally my date for Walton tide mill and windmill being demolished is wrong - it was 1921 not 1920. Maurice Griffiths mentions the Yacht Club house in "The Magic of the Swatchways", which pre-dates SW (and might have attracted AR to the place, perhaps) so it was certainly there when Nancy and Peggy rowed up to it.
