I can speak for Coniston in that the general winds are north/south. With the more common south wind one can leave Holly Howe/Bank Ground jetty and on one port tack reach the comforts of the Bluebird Cafe and in particular the splendid ice-creams. On leaving said comforts one single starboard tack should take one to the Jumping Jenny Cafe at Brantwood - best sticky toffee pudding outside Cartmel. After that - well, no more cafes, but one is at least soon within sight of Wild Cat Island.

There are difficulties, however, when the wind swirls down Coppermines Valley and therefore temporarily from the west. That port tack can easily turn into starboard with one sweep of the boom. Even worse is the south end of the lake where there are gaps in the surrounding fells and it has been known for a boat to sail before the wind through the narrow gap only to meet another boat head on - also on a run!

I did one sailing course on Ullswater which is also notorious for circular-shifting winds.
