I can offer some comments on Windermere, esp the South end and Rio Bay.
The prevailing S Westerley blows up the lake, but also comes out of some of the NE facing bays at a slightly different angle. A Northerly is ususally a nice wind. However, Easterly and Westerly winds are incredible as they are deflected round various hills and out of the bays. A boat can be "tacked", with no movement of the tiller, by a change in wind direction. There can be large calm spots surrounded by nice breeze (very irritating when racing).

Rio Bay is influenced by that rather large island which creates a long wind shadow, usually about 1km to its north. The wind then gets funnelled either side of the island

The Northern half of the lake is wider and therefore slightly less prone to these variations.

It might be that Ransome, being used to all these variations, liked the challenge of trying to sail straight, hence the fascination.
