I was about to make Mike's point as well. It means watching the water, as well as keeping an eye on other boats, nearby trees, flags, clouds, etc. for signs of wind shifts, gusts, etc.

Swallow was more prone to waggles than Amazon as her shallow keel provided less stability under wind gusting than Amazon's centreboard (of course, this same instability also made possible the race-winning maneuver in SD - with a proper deep keel, they'd never have been able to manage it!).
