Regarding the anticipating of wind changes; I was assisting the Race Director at my Yacht Club on the Committee Boat. He would change the course in mid-race when the wind changed so that the upwind leg was directly into the new wind direction, while I was not even aware that the wind had changed, and I've been sailing for 40-odd years! I swear the he could literally see the wind! It was quite uncanny.
