John: If I remember correctly, you live in Canada?? If so, you may be interested in Transport Canada's Registration Guide - How to Register a Ship in Canada.

A country needs a system - and I'm sure there is a rational reason for commercial vessels to have a registered tonnage - but to require such a system for pleasure vessels boggles the mind.

My MARGOLETTA has an Official Number (That makes sense), a name (One would think a name OR a number would suffice), its vital statistics - length and beam are recorded (that makes some sense) BUT, included are
ITs Gross Tonnage - 26.85 - and ITs Net/Register Tonnage - 18.26.

I can not imagine what useful purpose Gross and Net/Register tonnage serves in a pleasure vessel used for crusing the west coast.

But, I suppose it keeps several civil servants employed.
