Prue,
This has nothing to do with Christmas, but as far as I know, a bach (pronounced "batch")is a shack occupied by a batchelor. When I was in Australia I often heard the term. It can also refer to a married man's house when his wife is away visiting her mother or something. In Canada, we sometimes say that a man is "batching" when he is alone temporily. It usually implies that when his wife returns she will find the sink full of dirty dishes, empties stuffed down the sides of the sofa, cigarette butts in the potted plants, etc. etc. When she sees all this, his wife, quite understandably, will quickly visit another female relative, whereupon the poor slob will again take up residence in a bach. Merry Christmas to all.
