"Dick took of his glasses and polished them. Dorothea knew the sign"

[or something like that from which book I know not]

Did Dick have a compulsive hygene obsession or what? I was practically born with glasses, but my parents almost had to hold me kicking and screaming, in order to take them off me long enough to scrape off the thick green layer of slime and filth [of course, this didn't bother me, I could see out OK, they couldn't see in! It's the "Lace Curtains" effect]

I suspect this also [like mouth opening an shutting] comes from ARs own childhood. Brogan tells us that he aquired glasses late in his childhood when a teacher noticed his difficulty working in the classroom. So young Arthur probably felt uncomfortable with his specs, maybe a little self-conscious
[I, on the other hand, hated not wearing them; I am famous fgor complaining "give me back my glasses, my eyes are getting cold!"]
