Certainly they were used well into the 70s, perhaps even later. Also - even particularly - outside Coastguard Stations in the days when these were only a few miles apart.

I well remember seeing a South Cone on the North Foreland when we were bound from Boulogne to Harwich in my 22 footer. We had sailed with a Force 5/6 forecast and were having a lovely time - until then. With wind and tide behind us we could only go on, and the next few hours were interesting - but at least the cone gave us a bit of warning.

Probably just as well that it wasn't a NORTH cone!
