Ed,
I certainly share your comments about trying to get the youngsters to read AR. My son just couldn't be bothered. "Boring," he said. When he was growing up, his favourite TV show was Star Trek, so if it hadn't got space ships, aliens and explosions in space, he just wasn't interested. It was a little better with my daughter. She loved the first few books I gave her, and once wanted us to make a detailed map of the island where we lived at the time. We lived near Hong Kong, and slogging around the bush in 95 degree heat with humidity the same wasn't something I was looking forward to. Alas, that opportunity never came again and she didn't ask me again. I suppose I'm trying to say that if a child wants you to do something with him or her, never say no. You might be sorry years later.
