I suspect my own experience is a fairly common one. I began reading Ransome at an early age and in time acquired the whole set (hardcover). Then, when I emigrated at age 25 I decided I had really outgrown children's stories, and gave the lot to my niece (sigh). I forgot all about the stories until my own family came along in my late 30s and I started reading aloud (a practice still continued now I am 60). I wonder how many, like Ed Kiser, keep an interest throughout? Certainly in my years of running the Canadian branch of TARS (until this week, when I gratefully handed over to Harry Miller) there have been very few members in the young childless adult range.

I am happy to report that reading aloud has been successful in the case of my family, all of whom are book fiends. I am just finishing the third or fourth read-through of The Lord of the Rings and my 18-year-old commented the other day "We haven't had Arthur Ransome for some time". Whether they will keep their interest until they have children of their own remains to be seen. If only someone could be persuaded to make a really good movie series....
