Larboard was the old term for port or the left side of the vessel facing forwards. It officially went out of use in the 1800s though there was quite a long changeover period where both were used. You can understand why. Shouting Larboard in the teeth of a gale could be misunderstood as starboard, its surprising that it was used at all!

I have heard Peter's definition for starboard before but I can't remember where larboard came from.
