"But why would the S&As name a town after a river? Their 'Rio' is on a bay, 'Rio Bay', not an estuary. The end-paper maps show no river there, as far as I can see. I still say it's Rio de J."

I don't follow the logic of this posting. Firstly as Ed Kiser points out above, the Walkers themselves say that it is named after the port in the song "Rio Grande".
Secondly, there are six towns and cities called Rio Grande in Latin America and even one in the USA. As it means Big River, it it not unlikely that a number of ports or towns would be settled and named after the local geographical feature, just as Rio de Janeiro is. The city of Rio de Janeiro is named after a river.

The S&As sing a shanty about the Rio Grande, they never mention Rio de Janeiro anywhere in the book. Why should they not name their local port after somewhere named in a song they knew well. A place which is a destination for sailing vessels so must be a settled community not a desert island or some unnamed native settlement. They may not have even known that Rio means river.
