It was Margot Metroland, who appeared in several of his earlier novels. My abiding memory was that she avoided traffic jams by driving on to the pavement (sidewalk, for our Transatlantic readers). I don't think Molly drove in a part of the world where pavements existed at that time. Even Tarmac was rare; see the references in PP to dust stirred up by passing cars.
