A Fettler can be a railway worker who looks after the condition of the track, or who lays a track in the frst place. In a foundry, the process of removing the sprues and excess flashings form the raw castings is also known as "fettling". I think that it may be a word of considerable antiquity and usefulness, implying manual work of amny kinds.
