Chamber's Twentieth Century Dictionary 1959 Edition:

do brown (slang) to do thoroughly, to deceive or take in completely

OR

Rev R H Barham (1788 - 1845) - "Why Captain, My Lord, Here's the devil to pay/ The fellow's been cut down and taken away./ What's to be done?/ We've missed all the fun./ Why they'll laugh at and quiz us all over the town./ We are all of us done so uncommonly brown" (the Honorable Mr Sucklethumkin's Story)
