Hmmm, sounds like a quote from Winston Churchill but as he was not the most popular politician in Britain around that time (and I'm not sure if he'd begun writing books in the late 20's and early 30's although he had been a journalist earlier on) it may be a quote from one of the classic heros such as Nelson or some such other general or admiral.
