Further on “a well-known book” (not necessarily a naval book?) which said that “in naval warfare, two things are important, to know exactly what you want to do and to do it in the manner that your enemy least expects” (John in SA), there must have been quite a few Naval reminiscences of WWI coming out in the 1920s & 1930s. The reference to strategy suggests an Admiral eg Fisher or Jellicoe. Often of course refighting and debating the Battle of Jutland, when the British guns couldn’t hit the enemy!
