'Stone', as in 'stone bottle', is short for 'stoneware'. Stoneware has been made in Europe since Medieval times, and probably derives from Chinese wares. Stoneware is a type of earthenware which is fired at a comparatively high temperature, making it somewhat vitreous, and ideal for containing liquids. So 'stone bottles' are not 'carved' but moulded or cast from liquid clay. True stoneware is not produced much these days, but what they call 'oven to table ware' is derived from it, using a more modern formula.
