On further consideration (and actually reading what it says in the book):-

1) John ran from the landing place 'through the trees' to the harbour. Having been on the island myself I find it incredible that he would have run across it in the altogether. Indeed until Titty prunes the bushes round the path a few chapters later this would have involved pushing through the branches - a bit painful.
2) It transpires a few pages later that the Amazons were creeping about while all this was going on - a recipe for a bit of embarrassment all round!

BUT

3) A couple of days earlier John and Roger sail to Holly Howe with mail and to get fishing rods. "Of course you'll want them" said mother. "And there are your bathing things too.....You haven't bathed yet from the island?" Note the question mark. So mother evidently considered it quite possible and quite unremarkable that they might have bathed without bathing things.
