Donoghue v Stevenson was reported in 1932, whereas SA was published in 1930, and written the previous year. I doubt if AR would have heard of it. In any case, stone bottles and jars were still very common at that time. A jam-making firm, Keiller, still used them until fairly recently. One advantage of stonewares is that you can print labels directly onto them during manufacture, but a disadvantage is the hygiene problem which Mrs Donoghue became acutely aware of. Glass is much cheaper these days, anyway.
