As America was not a party to international copyright conventions in the 1930s, were Arthur Ransome’s books liable to piracy unless published in North America? It seems that SA was not published by Lippincott in America until 1931. Were later books published simultaneously in Britain and North America (I think that publishing in Canada was recognised under the American copyright law of the time).

PS: yes, copyright periods have got too long!
