There were four girls in the boat and two boys. Two of the girls had red woolly caps like Dorothea's green one, and two of them
had white.

I've always understood the two white caps to be on Susan and Titty ("Two of the girls had . . . and two of them . . ." making four girls with caps). IIRC one of the illustrations (either coming across the fields to the Observatory or around the igloo) shows this as well.
