Andrew -

In a way, I feel a bit of envy for your current position. You are into this adventure enough to appreciate it, and yet you have that as yet unreached vision of more to come. As each is read, as each becomes a part of you, there is still more to grown into, to experience for the first time without the foreknowledge of just how it all will work out. That thrill of the unknown is still there before you - yet the end is there; it is in sight. You know it will come, as dreaded as it may be to you. So when you reach that final end, you will have a certain realization that you have reached that final moment - that there will be no more. And yet, my envy also includes the knowledge that you are passing on this thrill to the next generation, to the young people that you lead, and through them, you can experience yet again the excitement that you once knew when you made your first trip through the adventure. You can share somewhat vicariously the excitement of your young people as they too make this imaginary world all their own, even as you had made it yours. It is this passing on to others that enables us to keep fresh the excitement that we knew and felt, and through these young minds, we get to feel it all again, as if for the first time. For these friends of my childhood are forever to be with me, never getting older, but being even more firmly a part of not only my past, but my future. Through them, I stay young. Just as through the eyes and minds of my grandchildren, I will also be young with them. And through them, I get to experience these adventures AGAIN, FOR THE FIRST TIME. Therein lies the magic of all things Ransome.
