Francis Spufford is a journalist in the UK., approximately 40 years od age, a Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year and a 1997 recepient of the Somerser Maughm and Writers' Guild awards. His other books are "I May Be Sometime" and "Ice and the English Imagination". His stuff is quite good and should not be judged only by the quote I submitted.
