A vertical transom looks rather ugly, and they are very seldom found on the old workboats that I look at. A slight rake is more usual. Ribs would have been steamed English Oak (quercus robor) or ash. Tiller would be ash. White Oak is a perfect substitute for English Oak - probably a slightly better timber.
