I, too, have experience with the type of traveler that Andy mentions. They do very often jam frustratingly and then un-jam with a great crash usually when things are a bit panicked anyway, so the added commotion is not appreciated.

With a traveler of that type at the stern, the tiller does need to be either underneath or forward of the traveler, neither of which sound practical on a small boat. So, barring the old yoke system, you will need to focus on a sheeting system that comes down to a traveler or block amidships. There are a number of sources for that type of set up, but as you say, it will require a stiffer boom.

Andy, I love the idea of a replica fleet of all the SA boats. When they have finished with that, they could continue with other boats in children’s books, starting with Ratty’s rowboat, perhaps. Others?
