Holly Howe is a real farmhouse, actually called Bank Ground, just a few miles north on the east side of Coniston. Its up a field from the lakeside so modern day Rogers can still be seen tacking up to their mothers.

The Dogs' Home is on the east side of the lake too, between Bank Ground and Peel Island near The Heald, one of Ransome's Lake District residences. It is up in the woods from the lakeshore road. It seems bigger in real life than Ransome drew it and it is very dark inside so take some illumination!

Incidentally, what about the theory that the name comes from the Battersea Dogs' Home a long established animal charity that I used to see advertised around Christmas in the early 1960s.

Beckfoot is not so easily identified, I don't believe there is a definitive Beckfoot, but I am sure there are a number of theories.
