A variety of horns, bells, and whistles are used throughout the books for signaling purposes. Examples include the hunter's horn in SD, bosun's whistle in a number of books, and the fog horn and fog bells in WDMTGTS.

We are looking for a horn or whistle to use as a signal to call kids home for dinner, bath time etc. Neighbors use cow bells, but there are already a few of those and we want something different.

How loud is a bosun's whistle? Is it something that could be heard over a 1/4 to 1/2 mile through woods and across a lake? Would I be better off with either an old fox hunting horn or a fog horn (the kind you blow, not the kind you crank)?

Thanks for the input.
