When I was at boarding school the house that I was in had what I fancy must have been the standard arrangement for a house such as I imagine Beckfoot to be, There was a carriage house, with double doors, which of course becomes a garage. Adjacent to it was the stable, a loose box in point of fact, convertible into tool shed and bicycle shed, and vertically above that, accessible by a ladder and with a trap door, the hay loft.

I have tended to assume that the pigeons were located in the now-vacant hay loft.
