All these remarks about people eating in the kitchen strike me as not recalling the social customs of the day.

Surely in a middle class household of 1930s England which could afford a cook and maid, the kitchen, pantry scullery etc. would be the preserve of the servants. The family would eat all meals in the dining room, Mrs Blackett might go in and discuss the day's meals, though Cook would probably come and discuss it with her. The Amazons would be in and out as they were children.

Life was more formal back then, even without the Great Aunt.
