There are obviously other houses nearby (other than just Jacky's farm) - I can't remember the exact references from PM, but there's definitely something stuck in my mind about someone being able to run to their house quite quickly which occasionally surprises me, as the maps tend to show it all on its own.
I might be being won over on the 'living in' question: she obviously was staying there during PM and not in the spare room...
But, again, somebody helping out in this way is different from the implication of them having 'servants' and 'servants' quarters' even if Cook may or may not have thought of herself as being 'in service'.
