Last month we had someone from the UK here in Thunder Bay, proposing to break the world speed record for ice yachts. Unfortunately, someone stole his expensive GPS system off the back of his truck while he was in a restaurant. It was later found by the side of a rural road, but by then he had gone back to the UK to get another. By the time he returned I gather the conditions (ice surface, wind) were never quite right.

I have never actually seen an ice yacht on the lake. Most years I suspect the surface is too rough. It is common to have truck races on the ice. We drove our car some distance out on the ice a few years ago, but I confess to feeling nervous, despite knowledge of the thickness of the ice. It just doesn't seem right!
