As something of a bystander in all this, I'm fascinated by the contributions on both topics. Since reading the books as a child I have a complete mental picture of the layout of Beckfoot, but I could not begin to translate this into drawings of any kind - I just mentally 'know' when I read what it looks like.

AR's politics are interesting, and though I am not totally aware of Hugh Brogan's thougts on the the matter I do have a lot of respect for them having met him when I was a mature student at Essex University (he was professor of American History, I think). Seeing as AR drew a lot upon on his own childhood etc. for various aspects of the novels it seems to follow that his political views (and any others) will also find their way.
