The whole feeling of the north end of the lake in WH and PM comes across as Windermere, rather than Coniston - the location of the river, the steamer pier, and the nearby village all more-or-less accord with the Ambleside area. (There is also a bay nearby with headlands that AR may have moved southwards to create Holly Howe Bay.) There is no North Pole building on the edge of the lake now but there has been plenty of debate as to whether there may once have been. There is also the Roman site close by which was excavated by Robin Collingwood (uncle of the Altounyan children, the original Swallows). A couple of hours in a hired native canoe rowing around the head of the lake is very rewarding for Ransome enthusiasts !
