John,
Like you, I am fascinated by Coots in the North. So much so, that I have bought a 12-foot clinker-built dinghy, probably most like Scarab - but with a gunter rig. I didn't have the skills needed to build her myself, but I did buy her part-finished and lovingly put on 10 coats of varnish. I learned to sail again after 30 years - they say it's like learning to ride a bike again, but I seemed to have forgotten everything I learned as a teenager. I imagine my efforts were similar to those AR had planned for the D's father in CN. In August we are taking the boat to Coniston - staying at Tent Lodge, of course - where we will try to sail the boat slowly, while fishing for charr, as AR planned in CN and as was described briefly, in his autobiography, I think. I too, spend a lot of time working out how the plot would develop...
