If I might throw a few spanners into the works ....
Shrewsbury is not the only public school in Shropshire. There is also Wrekin, at Wellington, and in those days, there was a direct train service from there to Crewe. (Note that this is nowhere near Wellington School.)
Another point in David Carter's book is that terms usually began and ended on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, which is also my experience up till the early 50s. The actual day seemed quite random, though no doubt there was some logic known to grown-ups. Later, my school took to starting on a Friday, so that we were immediately plunged into the weekend. Nobody went home for a weekend so early in the term, of course.
And the Summer Holidays ran from the fourth week of July to the third week of September. Public exams (School Certificate and Higher) were much later than now. When I took School Certificate, it didn't start till the second week of July. The results came out at the beginning of September.
