'BB went to a private school . . . . probably an officer . . .not a wimp' etc

It isn't 'likely', it is possible, no more. The word 'wimp' is inappropriate in this discussion. BB could have been a conscientious objector who volunteered for medical service at the front, as a stretcher bearer or whatever (this was quite common). Plenty of COs in this line of duty were killed or injured, or infected. 'Wimps' they were not. BB could have died of an infectious disease caught at the end of the war. I am not saying this is 'likely', but it is possible. We just don't know. Supposition is fine, but we should avoid piling one supposition on top of another. It is easy to use hand-me-down expressions like 'officer class', but the position was much more complex than that.

(By the way, if Ed K is happy to post extended messages, then I am more than happy to read them.)
