Such an interesting area Ed, particularly as so many English people get so worked up about American English being used in the UK when they themselves are so ignorant of its origins. Bill Bryson's book on the subject (I think it's called Mother Tongue - a quick search on Amazon will find it) will answer many of your dilemmas and should be read by any of us on either side of the Atlantic who interested in words and their use.
(I suspect in that paragraph there are quite a few errors of grammar and spelling and goodness knows what - so who am I to talk!)
